What the answer means

An age
The registry's registration date, and how long ago that was. If you ask about a subdomain, you get the domain it belongs to.
No RDAP for this TLD
Some registries, mostly country domains, don't publish RDAP, so we have nothing to ask. We don't guess.
Not found
The registry has no record of it. It's probably not registered.
No date
The registry answered but left out the registration date. Some do, for privacy or policy reasons.

What age tells you

A domain registered last week and already signing up for your product is worth a second look, because new throwaway domains appear all the time. But every real business had a new domain once, so treat age as one signal. It proves nothing alone.

An old domain isn't proof of anything either: domains get sold, and the date usually carries over. Our checks don't use domain age, and it doesn't change any verdict.

We ask the server IANA lists for the TLD, and keep the answer in memory for up to a day, so a date can be a day behind. Only the domain name goes to the registry.

What happens to what you type

Paste an address and, with JavaScript on, only the part after the @ leaves your browser. Without JavaScript the form sends what you typed to our server, which reduces it to the domain and opens that domain’s page. We don’t save what you check here, with one exception: the domain age tool keeps the registry’s answer for a domain in memory for up to 24 hours, so repeat checks don’t go back to the registry. It’s free, and limited to 30 checks a minute per visitor.

Need this on every signup? The API checks format, mail servers, disposable domains, role addresses and relays in one call, and the first 100 checks a month are free.
